Search is being rewritten by AI
Searching used to mean Googling. Not anymore — Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, and Google AI Overviews each play the game differently. Traditional search gives links; AI search gives answers. This difference is changing user habits.
I spent three weeks running 200+ queries. Here's what I actually found. Not the "each has its merits" filler you read in review articles — real judgments from actual use.
The three have completely different positions
Perplexity: built for search. Enter a question, it searches the entire web, gives you cited answers. Pro at $20/mo, free tier gives 5 Pro searches per day. Its core is "search + citation" — every answer has source links.
ChatGPT Search: search built into ChatGPT. Included in ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo, can't be bought separately. Advantage: can combine with conversation context — what you discussed earlier influences search results.
Google AI Overviews: free, embedded directly at the top of Google search results. No tool switch needed — searching Google automatically generates an AI summary. Lowest user barrier, since everyone already uses Google.
Key difference: Perplexity is "search-first," ChatGPT is "conversation-first + search-assist," Google is "search results + AI summary."
Search quality: each has strengths
Fact queries ("Company X Q1 2026 revenue") → Perplexity best. Cited sources are clear, clickable for verification. Google AI Overviews second. ChatGPT Search occasionally fabricates sources.
Research questions ("Compare mainstream AI coding tools in 2026") → ChatGPT Search strongest. Because it combines conversation context — tell it "I'm a frontend developer," and results skew toward frontend tools. Perplexity and Google don't adjust based on your background.
Real-time info ("Beijing weather today" "just-breaking news") → Google fastest. It's the search engine itself, with unrivaled indexing speed. Perplexity second. ChatGPT Search slowest, sometimes citing cached content from hours ago.
Citation accuracy
This is the lifeblood of AI search. Results:
- Perplexity: highest citation accuracy, 90%+ of sources are clickable and content matches
- Google AI Overviews: accurate but few sources, often only 2-3 websites
- ChatGPT Search: occasionally fabricates sources, about 5-8% of citation links don't open or don't match content
Poor citation accuracy has serious consequences. You think the data AI found has source backing, but the link doesn't open, or opens to content that doesn't match what AI said. This is particularly devastating when doing research reports.
Chinese search experience
All three search in Chinese, but gaps are clear. Google AI Overviews has the most comprehensive Chinese content coverage — it indexes the whole web. Perplexity's Chinese search is decent, but sources are often translated from English sites. ChatGPT Search handles Chinese queries okay, but deep Chinese content (Zhihu discussions, WeChat articles) has insufficient coverage.
If you primarily search Chinese content, Google AI Overviews is actually the most practical — free, comprehensive, no tool switching. Perplexity suits mixed Chinese-English research. ChatGPT Search fits "search while conversing" scenarios.
An overlooked point: privacy
All three tools log your searches. Google was already logging; AI Overviews didn't change that. Perplexity explicitly states free-tier searches are used for product improvement, while Pro users can opt out. ChatGPT Search records are stored with your ChatGPT conversation history, used for training by default.
If you search content involving trade secrets or personal privacy, this point is worth noting.
How to choose
Free users → Google AI Overviews. Zero cost, broadest coverage, used directly in Google.
Research users → Perplexity Pro $20/mo. Highest citation quality, suited for academic/industry research needing source verification.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers → just use ChatGPT Search, no extra cost. Its value is conversation context, not standalone search capability.
There's no "best" AI search — only "best for you." My advice: use free Google AI Overviews for two weeks first. If it's not enough, then consider Perplexity Pro. Don't pay upfront — for most people's search needs, free tools suffice.
