The name xAI is gone
In the early hours of July 7, 2026, Elon Musk's xAI officially rebranded to SpaceXAI, with a new logo to match. A video showed the old "x" mark folding and morphing into the new SpaceXAI identity. The official account on X switched from xAI to @SpaceXAI.
This didn't come out of nowhere. The timeline tells the story:
- July 2023: Musk founded xAI, with the mission to "understand the true nature of the universe"
- February 2026: xAI was acquired by SpaceX, with flagship chatbot Grok and social platform X folded into the SpaceX system
- May 2026: Musk announced xAI would dissolve as a standalone company and merge into SpaceX
- July 7, 2026: the rebrand landed, brand unified
From standalone company to fully absorbed, under eighteen months.
Why now
The rename isn't just a reskin. Post-merger, AI officially became one of SpaceX's core businesses, sitting alongside rocket launches and Starlink. Per earlier disclosures, SpaceX poured $12.7 billion into AI in 2025 and is pushing a wilder plan — launching AI compute satellites in 2028, moving model training into orbit.
More striking: SpaceXAI has already landed massive compute orders from Anthropic and Google. The company isn't just training its own models (Grok), it's selling compute to peers. Models in the left hand, infrastructure in the right.
The industry line: Musk didn't fold xAI into SpaceX because xAI was failing — he did it because SpaceX's ambition is bigger. AI plus aerospace plus Starlink, bundled, is a far bigger story than selling a chatbot.
What it means for the rest of us
For ordinary users, Grok is still there, X still works, little changes on the surface. But the underlying logic shifted: the AI features you use on X now run on SpaceXAI's models and compute; Starlink users may see AI capabilities bundled into their service.
For the industry, it signals a new phase of consolidation — standalone AI startups are finding it harder. Either get absorbed by a big platform, or grow your own infrastructure. Musk chose the latter, and bolted it onto aerospace, a lane nobody else can enter.
The name xAI is history. SpaceXAI takes the stage. As for how big this "AI in orbit" story gets, the 2028 satellites are the first real answer sheet.
