One-line positioning
The quiet, dependable blade for writing code, docs, and running agents
Claude is Anthropic's front door for the Claude 5 family, sitting inside chat and Claude Code. What people praise isn't a flashy trick — it's "long documents that stay on track, stable coding agents, and a model that doesn't hallucinate freely." Professionals treat it as a production and engineering workhorse rather than a toy.
Getting Started (based on community-tested notes, not first-person)
Note: Compiled from official docs, the Claude Code user community, and public benchmarks, rewritten and condensed by editors — not a claim that we tested each point ourselves.
- Pick a model: daily driving uses Sonnet 5 (introductory $2/$10 through Aug 31, then $3/$15) — best price-performance and the Claude default. For complex agentic coding or enterprise workflows, step up to Opus 5 ($5/$25). For the absolute ceiling, Fable 5 ($10/$50).
- Launch Claude Code: run claude in your terminal and hand it the repo directory. It reads, writes, tests, and opens PRs. Pair Opus 5 with xhigh effort for the hardest long-running tasks.
- Tune effort: Opus 5 offers five reasoning tiers — low / medium / high / xhigh / max — defaulting to high. Push up for tough jobs, pull down for everyday work to save cost.
Real Pain (community consensus)
Note: recurring pain points reported across the community, condensed by editors, not individually verified by us.
- Tier-split experience: when Fable 5's safety classifiers trip, it silently falls back to Opus 4.8 — the same prompt can be answered by a different model depending on topic, and long runs occasionally "break stride."
- Chinese daily use trails GPT-5.6: for casual chat and local ecosystem, Gemini and domestic assistants feel smoother; Claude wins on long-form, code, and knowledge work.
- Steep price steps: jumping from Sonnet to Fable is 5x. Tight budgets need tiering, not a blanket Opus upgrade.
- No free tier: the barrier to try it personally is higher than rivals that offer a free layer.
Hard Comparison (one-line verdicts)
- ChatGPT: wider multimodal reach and ecosystem, but Claude's long-form structure, coding agents, and "doesn't make things up" steadiness are more reassuring.
- Gemini: huge context and Google integration are strengths, but with 3.5 Pro endlessly delayed, Claude is steadier on frontier reasoning today.
- Domestic assistants (Tongyi / Doubao): free and localized in Chinese, but still half a step behind Claude 5 on frontier agents and long-run coding.
Who It's For / Not For
- For: writing code and long docs, research synthesis, automated agents, and professionals who need trustworthy, non-fabricated output.
- Not for: free-tier tinkerers, primarily Chinese small-talk users, or tight-budget dabblers who want everything free.
Editor's Take (our site's view)
Note: our judgment from a design-practitioner / AI-video angle — the angle that sets us apart from repost-only review sites.
Claude is the "writing" half of our stack — proposals, scripts, long-form structure, and code refactors all go to it. Especially after Opus 5 compressed "Fable-class capability" to half price, we finally trust it with daily heavy lifting. The real winner is Claude Code: hand it the repo and it reads, edits, tests, and opens PRs, killing a lot of mechanical labor. The downside is real too: tiers and pricing slice capability so finely that newcomers get confused by "why don't I have Fable." And for Chinese chit-chat and localization it genuinely lags domestic assistants. Our call: use it as the "writing + engineering core," outsource image generation to Midjourney and total orchestration to ChatGPT — the three-piece split is the most efficient.
