To be honest: DALL-E 3 is not the model a new project should pick in 2026. It blew up in 2023 because "describe it in plain words and get an accurate image, with legible text in the picture." But on May 12, 2026 OpenAI removed it from the API entirely, and ChatGPT's default image engine switched to GPT Image 2. It still lives inside the ChatGPT UI, but it's really the successor's shell.

Our stance on DALL-E 3 is clear: nostalgia is fine, but don't touch it for new projects. Its "writes text in images" was stunning in 2023, but in 2026 GPT Image 2 does it better (2K, searches while drawing) and FLUX / Midjourney ran ahead on aesthetics. If your workflow is inside ChatGPT and you occasionally need a graphic, it's enough and zero-friction; but for stable, batch, style-controlled output, turn to GPT Image 2 or Midjourney. The worst trap is for developers: anyone still calling the DALL-E 3 API is dead after May 12, 2026 — migrate to the gpt-image family before production breaks, not after.
